Hotel and Lodging Managers
I. JOB SUMMARY
Main Topic: Places and Region
Secondary Topic: Human Geography
Overview: Hotel and lodging managers work in a wide array of settings, from large hotels in big cities, to smaller inns or bed and breakfasts in small towns. No matter what the setting, they are responsible for ensuring that guests staying in their lodging have a good and comfortable experience. They also oversee most other operations at their business such as housekeeping, advertising, food services, maintenance, customer service, and human resources amongst others. Lodging managers should possess an appropriate amount of geographic knowledge, especially regarding the location in which their business is located. If they are located near a tourist attraction, park, airport, or general point of interest, they should be aware of the times of the year when they might expect more guests. It is also important to have geographic awareness of the city where the business is located in order to accurately give directions, or provide recommendations to guests on places to visit, restaurants to eat, or just general information if they were to ask.
