Meteorologist
I. JOB SUMMARY
Main Topic: Physical Geography
Secondary Topic: Environment and Society
Overview: Meteorologists study the earth’s atmosphere, it’s physical characteristics and how these affect the environment. Meteorologists also analyze weather conditions and use these to make forecasts. There are two main types of meteorologists- those who specialize in research and those who forecast the weather. In order to be an effective geographer, you must have a strong understanding of weather and climate and how it impacts our environment. This makes geographers particularly well suited to become meteorologists. Also, many meteorologists collect data from satellite images of the earth, as well as from radars, remote sensors and weather stations all over the world. Geographers are well prepared to collect as well as analyze these types of spatial data. Meteorologists are also key in predicting and researching climate change and how it is affecting the earth. A geography background would give a meteorologist a firm understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change.
