Education

Having a strong understanding of geographic knowledge is a powerful tool for navigating life in the 21st century. A simple examination of various jobs and careers exemplifies how geography is embedded – from emergency management to agriculture, from epidemiologists to urban planners. Geography is a part of every aspect of our lives. We use geography to get from point A to point B, when we logically decide which route to take home to avoid traffic, when we decide to recycle plastics and turn off the water when washing our hands.

This is all geography.

Nevertheless, this is not the geography taught in the K-12 curriculum or considered by the general public. Geography has lost its significance to other disciplines such as civics, anthropology, science, technology, engineering, and history. The discipline has failed to break through the K-12 curriculum as more than just memorization of physical features or human and environmental modifications, despite its in-depth ability to address cultural  connections, solve world problems using GIS technology with a geographical mindset, and create an active citizen in one’s community through geographic thinking.
